As I think we all recognise networking is the sport of choice when it comes to securing a new role. A couple of weeks ago I was lucky enough to meet Heather White from Smarter Networking in my search to increase my own knowledge and expertise in networking. Heather was a real inspiration and has given me some articles on networking – I offer them for your edification and general interest. Competent jerks, lovable fools - PDF 110kb How leaders create and use networks - PDF 139kb The Killer Introduction: Myth or Reality? - PDF 626kbHeather has also asked what are the big 5 issues that ex military face as they seek to establish and then leverage their network on leaving the services? She has offered to get her firm to write bespoke articles on our top 5 – so thinking caps on and let me know what you think the big 5 networking challenges facing us are. We would urge you to take any and every opportunity that comes you way. This brings me neatly onto letting you know about a new network that has sprung up and is seeking (very effectively) to fill the void left by the demise of ‘The Liquid List’ ‘GIB’ et al. Jules McElhinney (ex Black Watch) and Nick Burnett (ex SCOTS DG) had established this network which has at it’s core a military base, but seeks to rapidly expand much wider than just the military – this is a key element to its success. It is envisaged that the network would meet as a minimum once a quarter and no more than once every 6 weeks. Jules and Nick are planning to create a group on LinkedIn, which we at OA Scotland intend to join and feed into. I would urge you to join. Minutes from the latest meeting, along with dates for the next ones are available for download at the end of this page. Whilst on the subject of LinkedIn – if you haven’t joined the OA Scotland group then please do – if you are a Linked In virgin, let us know and we can send you an invitation. The guy who has designed our website, has tweaked it so that when a new client registers on the website the receive an automatic invitation to join our Linked In group – magic!!
