Self Awareness - The Judgement Index PDF Print E-mail

What is the Judgement Index?

The Judgement Index is an on-line assessment backed up by 40 years of experience and research.   Judgement Index UK is dedicated to measuring, building and strengthening Good Judgement .   The Officers Association Scotland has teamed up with JIUK to provide our clients with access to the JI assessment tool.  We will assess you and give you confidential feedback and a comprehensive set of reports on your strengths, development areas, balance and potential to transit into civilian life at the same time dealing with the changes that are ahead.

Why should OAS clients take the assessment?

If transition is a fancy name for change and a key element of being able to make effective change is the ability to make choices, how do we determine what the choices are and even more importantly how do we assess and judge those choices?  One of the vital elements, indeed the very bedrock of being able to make effective choices is self awareness.  There are endless definitions of Self Awareness; it could be seen as guiding you to capitalise on your strengths while raising your awareness of your capability to change and develop.   We all like to think that we are self aware, emotionally intelligent human beings, but it is often useful to have someone hold up a mirror for us so that we can have a really good look – whilst not always a comfortable experience it is vital one.

One of the problems facing service leavers – and indeed most job-seekers – is a lack of self knowledge;  they often do not know what they have to offer any future employer.

In addition, the  reality is that many employers now use personality assessment tools – and there a huge array, so knowing what they say about you might be seen as being to your advantage.  There are two criticisms that we often hear of such tools, firstly is that they are just tools and can be manipulated and secondly that they are too subjective on how you feel/perform in the work environment which is unhelpful when you are seeking to fundamentally change environment.  Whilst no tool is perfect, they can fulfill a real and valuable function and this is recognised by service leavers, many of whom wish that they had been put through some form of assessment and then had a meaningful follow up.

The JI questionnaire asks the subject to list a number of  value- judgements in order of preference.  These judgements are not dependent on the subject’s present environment – or indeed on their past experience.  They therefore provide a guide to the subject’s core values and indicate how they will react in decision making, problem solving, relationships and other key judgement areas.

The JI involves a 15 minute on line assessment.  We have trialled the Judgement Index tool with a number of people and have found that it provides helpful insights into areas of strength and development areas as well as helping individuals to think about how they respond to change (and transition to civilian life is very significant change for most people).

What do you need to do if you would like to take the assessment?

OA Scotland is now going to offer an individual Judgment Index assessment as part of its service leavers package from July 2010.    Our first workshop will be held on 7 September 2010.  If you wish to take part in this workshop you must complete the assessment prior to this.

Please contact Mary-Clare to find out more and to be given access to the Judgement Index.
