OA Scotland provide support and relief to officers and their families.
We offer confidential, non-judgemental and tailored support to current and former officers and their families in need. Sometimes that’s long-term help and advice such as lifelong grants. Sometimes it’s short-term urgent options, when it most needed, to get people past the inevitable bumps in the road of life.
No matter when the need arises, we can support you.
Our grants are wide ranging covering areas such as mobility support, home repairs or adaptations, replacement household goods, debt, respite breaks, signposting to the appropriate agencies and Bursary awards. Let us know in confidence what you need and we will always do our best to help.

OA Scotland has been supporting Joan* over the last two years with an annual grant. Joan is a widow in her 70’s whose husband was a Commissioned Officer in the Army. Joan began to struggle financially after her husband died, resulting in a dramatic reduction in income. Joan’s husband had been responsible for their income and household bills and so was completely at a loss when he passed. OA Scotland was there to support her financially and through her caseworkers we have supported her emotionally, assisting her to explore other ways of handling and maximising her income. |
Bill* is in his 30’s and suffers from low mental health, which he had, unbeknown to him, previously addressed through playing football. After several injuries, Bill had to give this up. It was identified that as a natural sportsman, Bill used this as a way of managing his stress and anxiety. OA Scotland was asked if they would consider a grant for sports equipment for Bill in order that he could continue to be active. OA Scotland was able to provide a grant, given the compelling evidence that it would have a positive, immediate and long term impact on Bill’s mental health, thereby improving his quality of life and that of his family.
Charlotte approached OA Scotland to apply for a bursary to help support her in the undertaking of a MSc in Special Care Dentistry at the University of Aberdeen. Charlotte was a reservist with the Royal Air Force and worked as a Dentist since with NHS Grampian in the Public Dental Service which provides cover across Moray. Charlotte chose to specialise in Special Care Dentistry as the number of cases were rising across her region and there was no one that specialised in that area.
She describes how these cases of need are increasing each year and yet it is an area that is only touched upon in dental undergraduate teaching. She advised that the qualification would enable her to not only provide better treatment for her own patients but advise other dentists in the service of current advice and guidelines. She also supervises undergraduate students in an outreach setting and being able to impart accurate evidence based information to students is essential.
The Trustee’s approved Charlotte’s application and a grant was paid to the University of Aberdeen. “Thank you so much for supporting me in my application and study. I am really enjoying my course and I have found it very beneficial to my working practice. Thank you once again.”
